General Information

MRGS offers a two-year half-day program for gifted and academically motivated juniors and seniors. Participants take two science courses, mathematics, and English course at MRGS and then return to their home school in the afternoon to take their other required courses and their electives. Our half day program allows students to remain active participants at their home schools while still receiving the academic rigor that our program provides. In order to attend Massanutten, students undergo a rigorous and competitive application process. We seek college-bound students that are in the top 20% of their class, are over-achievers, creative, self-motivated, and are looking for something beyond the average high school curriculum.
Massanutten Regional Governor's School for Environmental Science and Technology opened in the fall of 2005 and is one of the 19 Academic Year Governor's Schools in the state of Virginia. MRGS is housed in Shenandoah County, located along the Interstate 81 corridor between the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains. MRGS is operated as a joint school serving approximately 75 students from 10 different high schools from the counties of Page, Rockingham, and Shenandoah, as well as Harrisonburg City.
School divisions provide transportation for students coming to MRGS. Classes begin at 7:45 and students depart for their home school at 10:30. The staff consists of four full-time instructors, a Director, and an Administrative Assistant. The majority of classes are either Advanced Placement or dual enrolled with Lord Fairfax Community College or James Madison University.
