General Information

The Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology opened in 1985 as a regional center for the advanced study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The school is a joint initiative between the Virginia Department of Education and seven school districts; Bedford County, Botetourt County, Craig County, Franklin County, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, and Salem City. The school serves approximately 270 students in grades 9—12 for a half-day program, either morning or afternoon. Students attend RVGS for half a day and take a math course, science course and a research elective course. They take the remainder of their courses at their home high school. Students must apply for admission and are chosen competitively by selection committees from each of the participating school districts.

There are 11 full time faculty members, a Director, an Administrative Assistant, and a full time Guidance Counselor along with 4 part time retired faculty members who assist with our research courses.
