Unique Program & Traditions

Public Art is a component of GSA's focus and all art forms participate. These include painting dumpsters and buildings, participating in street fairs by way of community art projects, flashmobs, and street performances.

Visual Arts students participate annually in Earth Day by painting dumpsters and in the Neptune Festival Sandcastle competition. Visual Arts students have been commissioned by various businesses to create art for their buildings and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital has recently commissioned art work for their outdoor courtyard.

Dance students participate yearly in either the National or Regional High School Dance Festival. This festival brings together high school age dancers from around the world to take master classes, workshops and perform. GSA is the host school for the Regional High School Dance Festival, which takes place in Norfolk every two years. Over 1,000 participants come to the School for an intensive weekend of study. A college fair and scholarship auditions are also a part of the event.

Instrumental Music Students are participating in cutting edge research in a Music and Medicine program, spearheaded by a leading neurologist originally from the Cleveland Clinic, who has relocated to Hampton Roads. The students play in small chamber groups on the wards of the hospital for patients.

The Musical Theatre Department has travelled to Japan to perform for the past 15 years. The students typically travel every 2 to 3 years on a good-will mission trip. They perform for the public, for children, and for Japanese dignitaries.

The Theatre Department has a unique relationship with an equity theatre company, Virginia Stage Company. This partnership offers opportunities for our students to intern as actors and in technical theatre in equity productions.

The Vocal Music Department is a part of the Virginia Opera mentor program, where our students have the opportunity to attend operas and master classes, as well as perform with the Opera.
