FOVGS and Academic Year Governor's Schools

Friends of Virginia Governor's Schools

Parents of SWVGS students can be involved with the Friends of Virginia Governor's Schools (FOVGS). The FOVGS mission is to promote the academic-year Governor's Schools. Through advocacy, the FOVGS acts to cultivate state funding for these schools, which model excellence in education and achievement. The FOVGS makes contacts with the Governor's office and key legislators to help create an effective, proactive course of action with the Governor's office and with legislators.

Each year, FOVGS encourages all Governor's Schools to nominate a parent to represent their school. Interested parents should contact Mary Phillippo Parker with the FOVGS. Please also visit the FOVGS website: fovgs.org.

The FOVGS also organizes an annual event called Capitol Day. This is an opportunity for a group of students and Governor's School representatives to travel to Richmond to meet with legislators and discuss the importance of Academic Year Governor's Schools. Appointments with regional Delegates and Senators are made and students are able to discuss what Governor's School has meant for them and to express appreciation for Governor's School funding.
