Types of Academic Year Governor's Schools

Each Academic Year Governor's School (AYGS) uniquely tailors its programs and schedule to meet the needs of students within the geographic area it serves. Utilizing in-person, virtual, and blended learning instructional models, Virginia Governor's Schools have proven themselves strong in providing differentiated instruction that is developed to meet the needs of high-achieving students of different backgrounds and interests. Through differentiation of content, process, student products, and learning environment, Governor's Schools offer their students experiences not matched in traditional academic settings. Some sites have developed full-day academic programs, while others have honed their course offerings to support in-depth study of targeted educational disciplines during only part of students' school day. Though most of Virginia Governor's Schools are stand-alone sites, some have adopted a school-within-a-school model to build partnerships with high schools and universities.
